5 essentials of a top data analyst resume

  1. Contact details

Write a professional header to easily read and find contact information. This header must include: your full name, city, state, ZIP code, phone number and email address. If you have GitHub or an online portfolio showcasing previous work, link to it in this section. You can also include your professional networking profile, like LinkedIn, or profiles from membership organizations, like the International Society for Data Science and Analytics (ISDSA).

  2. Personal statement

The data analyst resume summary, or professional summary, is your introduction. In no more than five sentences present who you are as a candidate, including your years of experience, your strongest skill and an important professional accomplishment.

    For example:

Highly motivated data analyst with more than five years of experience in translating raw data into actionable insights to drive business growth. Skilled in data cleaning, manipulation, analysis and visualization, leveraging tools like SQL, Python and Tableau. Proven ability to identify trends, patterns and anomalies in large datasets, leading to increased sales by 15% through targeted marketing campaigns.

  3. Skills

Your data analyst resume skills section shows an employer what you bring to the table. Create a balanced skills section with 6-12 abilities you can perform. Use the job description as a guide and match their job skills to your own.

Use a bulleted list to include soft skills, like relationship building, excellent communication and conceptual thinking, and hard skills, like SQL, Python and data visualization.

  4. Work history

Beyond showing your previous employment, your work history highlights your professional accomplishments. Format it as our data analyst resume example shows and include the name of the employer, dates of employment and location. If you have more than one role at one employer, separate them.

Under each role, include a bulleted list with three quantifiable achievements

    For example:

    • Utilized Python and SQL to segment customer data based on demographics, purchase history, and browsing behavior to create a targeted marketing campaign to increase sales by 15%.
    • Reduced manual effort by 25%, freeing up data analyst time for higher-level tasks like analysis and modeling.
    • Developed a data governance framework compliant with industry standards and regulations, enhancing data security and promoting responsible data usage.

If you’re applying for your first position as a data analyst, include other relevant work experience, like volunteer experiences and community services where you used your interpersonal skills

  5. Education

Start your education section with your highest level of education; include the institution’s name, degree and graduation date. For example:

Associate of Science in Information Technology
University of the Potomac. Falls Church, Virginia.
    May 2022

If graduation was 10 years ago, skip the year. Remember to also list other post-high school courses you’ve completed.

Do’s and don’ts for building a data analyst resume

  • Use measurable achievements to describe your data analyst skills and experience.
  • Use action words to make an impact on your data analyst resume.
  • Tailor your resume to your target data analyst job.
  • Use keywords from the job description throughout your data analyst resume.
  • Format your data analyst resume so that it is easy to read by ATS software and human eyes.
  • Lie about your data analyst experience and skills.
  • Boast about your “incomparable” data analyst abilities.
  • Include irrelevant personal information such as your ethnicity and age.
  • Add skills and experience that do not pertain to a data analyst.
  • Forget to proofread. A data analyst resume with errors is unprofessional and will be discarded.

Top 4 tips for acing a data analyst interview

  1. Research the potential employer

Research your potential employer through their official channels, the news, social media and current or previous employees you might know. The research will help you improve your interview answers and formulate your own questions for the end of the interview.

  2. Practice at home.

Make time to practice potential interview questions, like behavioral questions. For example:

Find an interview partner, someone you can trust to provide you with constructive feedback regarding your answers. Remember to mind your body language, which speaks before you even utter a word.

  3. Ask questions.

Time to interview the employer. Formulate questions to learn more about the role and the company, and figure out if this is the right move for your career. These questions will also show your inquisitive nature and thorough preparation.

A few examples of questions to ask are:

    • What are the expectations for this role?
    • How do you support continued professional development?
    • How would you describe team culture?
    • What changes would you like to see in this role?
    • Why are you looking for a new person to fill this role?
    • How does management handle conflict among staff?

To learn more about the role, use open-ended questions and give the interviewer enough time to answer. You can bring a small notebook or piece of paper with your questions and write down important details from their answers.

  4. Round up your references.

Find former managers, colleagues or individuals who can vouch for your skills to act as your references. Let the possible recommendations know where you are in the process and if they should expect a phone call or email. Also, ask if they could provide a letter of recommendation, just in case a potential employer requests one.
