Important resume sections

  1. Resume Header

Start with your resume header. Include your first and last name, reachable phone numbers, digital portfolio and a professional email address.

You can also include a resume headline or a tagline for your resume. It’s short, catchy and optional.

  2. Resume Objective

Introduce yourself with a resume objective. These sentences show an employer your title, where you are in your career, what you want to accomplish and your skills.

    Use this formula:

[Who you are] [Years of experience] [Statement of intent] [Top qualifications]

    For example:

Results-driven computer science graduate seeking an entry-level software development position. Proficient in programming languages such as Java, C++, and Python, with experience in software development, database management and system architecture. Seeking an entry-level software development position.

If you have professional experience in the industry, use a career summary highlighting your experience and work achievements.

  3. Education

As a student, your computer science student resume will focus on your education section. Write a robust education section by including:

    • Relevant coursework
    • Awards and recognitions
    • Memberships or clubs

See our college student resume examples for additional samples and tips for crafting an effective student resume.

  4. Skills

When writing a resume with no experience, the skills section should be front and center. In a dedicated skills section, focus on 5 to 10 relevant hard and soft skills.

    • Hard skills, like database management or programming languages, are the teachable abilities and technical skills needed to perform your job.
    • Soft skills are habits that help you perform, like time management, adaptability and interpersonal skills.
  5. Work History

Create a work history section including part-time roles, volunteer jobs and internships. Under each role, add three bullet points with quantifiable accomplishments to showcase what you bring to the table.

As you write, focus on achievements and skills you could use in this role and combine them with action verbs to empower each. For example, if you worked in the food service industry, highlight your ability to thrive under pressure and manage relationships, both excellent transferable skills for the computer science field.

  6. Additional sections

Computer science is a competitive field. Including additional sections in your computer science student resume can help you stand out.

    • Certifications
    • Languages
    • Hobbies
    • Special projects
    • Extracurricular activities
    • Student organizations
    • Volunteering

Best practices

  • Highlight academic achievements and extracurricular activities: Bring attention to your soft skills through your academic achievements and any extracurricular activities you have been part of.
  • Tailor the resume for each application: Every employer looks for something different. Customizing your computer science resume to highlight the specific qualifications for the role will help you stand out.
  • Use a clean, professional format: Make a great first impression with an easy-to-read layout and format. Be consistent in your fonts and headers.
  • Don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach: A generic resume is easy to spot and dismiss. Take the time to target your resume for the role you’re seeking by matching as much information as you can.
  • Don’t include irrelevant information: Students are not expected to have vast experience. Avoid including unnecessary information to pack your resume. Focus on improving the sections you include.
  • Don’t forget to proofread: Careless mistakes give a bad impression on hiring managers. Use the available sources to check your grammar and spelling for an impeccable resume.

Interview tips

  1. Start with a strong objective or summary.

Your resume objective is like an elevator pitch. It briefly tells an employer your strongest qualifications and goal for the role. Write an objective that’s clear and makes a big impact.

  2. Highlight relevant coursework and projects.

Emphasize your educational experience, special projects and other relevant academic experiences. This will show employers you are committed to learning and making an impact in the computer science industry.

  3. Use action verbs and quantifiable achievements.

Combine your quantifiable achievements with action verbs. These words empower what you’ve accomplished and save space.

  4. Include a skills section.

A glance at your skills section can set you on the path to success. Include hard skills customized to the job, and remember to add soft skills.

  5. Proofread and get feedback.

Check your grammar and spelling. Use online sources and another set of eyes to confirm everything is correct. Also, find a trusted individual, like a mentor or upperclassman, and ask for their feedback on improving your computer science student resume.
