6 Junior Accountant Interview Questions & Answers

What steps have you taken recently to become a better junior accountant?

I started taking steps toward getting my Certified Public Accountant designation by brushing up on my accounting skills and taking necessary courses. I also started attending workshops to help me become more familiar with common accounting software, like QuickBooks. I really want to do well in this industry, so I know I have to take classes, attend workshops and go to conferences if I want to succeed.

How does this position fit in with your career goals?

I have wanted to join the accounting industry since I was a sophomore in high school and took my first accounting course. I see this junior accountant position as the perfect stepping stone into the industry. It is a way for me to gain hands-on knowledge while I pursue my bachelor’s degree and other certifications. Not only is this a position that interests me, but I believe this company could give me a bright future as a CPA and beyond. This company is known for having high-quality accountants, and I would like to work at a company with a great history.

What do you do to minimize the errors in your work?

Even as a junior accountant, I know the reports and statements I work on are important to the company. That is why I double check and confirm all of my work before sending it in. While I was at my last job as an assistant bookkeeper, I helped develop a spreadsheet that the entire team used to confirm work orders and other information. The spreadsheet was a great source of information and helped everyone provide more accurate and efficient results.

Why do you want to work in the industry of accounting?

I enjoy working with numbers and am a very detail-oriented person. I first got interested in the accounting industry when I worked as a cashier at a boutique in my hometown. There was only one bookkeeper at the boutique, so I occasionally helped keep records and the like. It was not really an accounting position, but it got me interested in the trade. I want to be an accountant because I think I have what it takes to be successful in this type of position.

Are you familiar with any accounting software?

I have some basic knowledge about QuickBooks, but I am very good with computers. While I may not have the experience working with accounting software, I know I will be able to pick up on the programs quickly. I am proficient with Excel and have some HTML knowledge, which I think will be able to translate into learning accounting software. It might not be a direct transfer, but it should at least help me pick up on the program quickly.

Do you feel you will be able to maintain confidentiality when necessary?

As a professional new to the accounting industry, I understand that confidentiality plays a key role. Customers and companies expect their financial information to remain private. I do feel very confident that I will be able to keep a high level of confidentiality when it comes to the financial information I work with. Integrity and honesty have always been important values for me, so I would strive to keep those traits at the forefront.
