5 essentials of a top resume for a maintenance technician

  1. Contact details

Add your contact information to the top of your resume so hiring managers can contact you. As our maintenance technician resume sample shows, your contact information must include your full name, city, state, ZIP code, phone number and professional email address. If you have a LinkedIn profile and a professional website, add them last.

  2. Personal statement

A professional summary, also known as a personal statement, is a concise, three-to-five-sentence statement that tells the hiring manager who you are and what you offer. A maintenance technician resume summary must include job-relevant skills and one or two notable accomplishments, and it should touch on how long you’ve been in the industry. If you are just starting out in your career, it’s better to write a maintenance technician resume objective instead.

A personal statement for a maintenance technician might be something like:

?Dedicated and detail-oriented Maintenance Technician with 5+ years of experience in performing general maintenance and repairs of residential and commercial buildings. Highly skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, as well as performing preventative maintenance. Possesses strong communication skills, a strong work ethic, and excellent problem-solving abilities. Committed to providing excellent customer service and ensuring optimal performance of all equipment.”

  3. Skills

Create a skills section for your maintenance technician resume so hiring managers can see if your skill set matches their needs. A maintenance technician resume will have a separate section for your job-relevant skills in a bulleted list. As our sample resume for a maintenance technician shows, skills for a maintenance technician resume should include hard skills such as data analysis and soft skills, such as attention to detail.

  4. Work history

A maintenance technician resume must include a work history section, even if this is your first professional job. In reverse-chronological order, display your current and previous employers and provide company names, locations and the dates you worked for them. Include three bullet points of measurable achievements for every job you list.

Be specific about your achievements and use numbers to show how you made an impact.

    For example

    • Developed a new maintenance program that reduced downtime and improved efficiency by 25%.
    • Successfully completed preventative maintenance on all equipment in a timely manner.
    • Reduced safety hazards by adhering to strict safety protocols and procedures.
  5. Education

A resume for a maintenance technician must include an education section. In reverse-chronological order, show the name of the schools and the years you graduated using bullet points. If you did not attend college, list your high school information and the classes or training you’ve taken since graduating. If you come from an apprenticeship, then list it here.

There is no specific educational requirement to be a maintenance technician, but you should have at least a high school diploma or a vocational diploma in this field.

Do’s and don’ts for building a maintenance technician resume

  • Use measurable achievements to describe your maintenance technician skills and experience. For example, “Increased the lifespan of production equipment by 25%.”
  • Use action words such as “inspect,” “repai,” and “troubleshoot” to make an impact on your maintenance technician resume.
  • Tailor your resume to your target maintenance technician job.
  • Use keywords from the job description throughout your maintenance technician resume.
  • Format your maintenance technician resume so that it is easy to read by ATS software and human eyes.
  • Lie about your maintenance technician experience and skills. Instead, match your skills to the job requirements, for example, mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting.
  • Boast that you’re the “best maintenance technician ever.” Instead, highlight previous work achievements, such as “Improved the accuracy of maintenance inspections by 25%.”
  • Include irrelevant personal information such as your ethnicity and age.
  • Add skills and experience that are about something other than a maintenance technician job.
  • Forget to proofread. A maintenance technician resume with errors is unprofessional.

Top 4 tips for acing a maintenance technician interview

  1. Research first.

It’s vital to take the time to learn about the institution or company’s history, goals, values and people before the interview. Doing so conveys interest, passion and commitment — traits that can set you above the competition.

    Some things to consider include:

    • The company’s maintenance team structure and size
    • Training and development opportunities
    • The company’s safety record and protocols
    • The company’s maintenance budget and resources
    • The company’s reputation for reliability and quality maintenance services
  2. Practice your answers.

Practice is really important. Be sure to practice for your interview by reviewing the most common interview questions, such as:

Think about  possible job-related interview questions such as:

    • What experience do you have with troubleshooting and repairing maintenance issues?
    • How do you stay up to date with the latest maintenance techniques and technologies?
    • Describe a difficult maintenance situation you have faced in the past and how you solved it.
    • What safety protocols do you follow when performing maintenance tasks?
    • How do you prioritize maintenance tasks when there are multiple tasks to be completed?

And some possible behavioral questions such as:

Write down two or three possible answers for each question, then practice answering them with a friend.

  3. Prepare questions to ask during the interview.

After the hiring manager and potential colleagues question you, they will likely offer for you to ask them some questions. Always have at least three for each person you speak with; doing so shows that you’re interested and have been paying close attention.

Some questions you might ask for a maintenance technician job are:

    • What kind of maintenance experience and qualifications are you looking for in a successful candidate?
    • What kind of maintenance training and resources are available to me in this role?
    • What kind of tools and equipment will I be expected to use on the job?
    • What is the typical work schedule like in this role?
    • What kind of growth opportunities are available in this role?
  4. Gather references

Have professional references ready during your interview. It comes in handy, especially if the hiring manager offers you the job on the spot. Make a list of two former colleagues and a former manager willing to speak highly about your abilities to perform the maintenance technician job.
